But by doing so, they’ve created a rare thing in TV: a police procedural that values visual flair, physical comedy, and creativity over the dull and depressing elements of modern police dramas.

Olympic Grit Meets Police Brutality
Not only can vigorous physical training for elite sports prepare individuals to become members of law enforcement, but, in this program, it is the only construction possible for such a preparation. Gold medals replace badges as protagonists bring a unique form of acrobatic violence to the streets to defy the established norms of violence in a genre of television and movies filled with dour and deliberate, often slow, investigations.
The program could have easily attempted to profit from its central conceit of vigorous physical training for elite sports to prepare individuals for law enforcement, and it could have become a hollow gimmick. Yet, the production still keeps the audience interested by balancing the seriousness of the potential stakes of the narrative with a considerable amount of wit and levity.
The Lead Performance Defies Expectations
Park Bo-gum lights up this production by stretching the boundaries of his range and not being afraid to portray a character who engages in a lot of active lifestyle and situational comedy. He adds tremendous amount of humanity to a character who comes across on paper as a more cartoonish character.
It is true that the character work is an afterthought to the amazing set pieces in this series, but that isn’t what this series is about. This series is not trying to showcase aeneid level acting. They are trying to showcase the tough internal struggle of a character who used to fight for this less tangible form of glory.
Stylized Pacing and Visual Impact
The patterns keep the pace of the episodes fast and furious, like a sporting event. Momentum built by punchy edits and propulsive score make the series feel more like an action blockbuster than a basic TV procedural.
Some of the style sacrifices theme. The show hits its thematic targets, but the narrative is still a little too surface-level. Systemic injustice is one theme the show pokes at, if subtly, but the majority of the audience would appreciate more complexity from the show on this topic.
Verdict for the Viewer
If you want a show that focuses on entertainment and physical performance, then this is your show. Those who enjoy grittier details in their shows, prefer their law enforcement portrayals more realistic, or enjoy their shows with slower pacing and more character detail, will likely have trouble with the show’s frenetic pace and its reliance on a high-concept plot.
