Peaky Blinders is a Worthy Investment for Fans of Gritty Period Crime
Peaky Blinders is a great post war Britain period piece and deserves its place in the gangster epic genre. This show is a slow-paced character study and drama. This makes the show a great choice for those people who are not into rapid drama.
A Stylized Vision of Birmingham
The series has an edge over most that try to capture the same genre. Peaky Blinders has an aesthetic unlike most productions, which stems primarily from its choice to adopt a gritty 1919 Birmingham industrial landscape. Unlike most period pieces, Peaky Blinders sheds its polish for a gritty, smoky, and realistic depiction of Birmingham that verges on surreal. The cinematography of the series is also massive. The backdrop of the show is a reflection of the internal struggles of the Shelby family. Peaky Blinders can head strongly into the land of pretention with its choices, though most of the series pace and mood are there for good reason. Instead of giving its viewers easy action sequences that canob be a load of fake build up, the series focuses on building the characters and letting the audience simmer in the built atmosphere. This is a rare case where an entirely new style is able to thrive in the heavily saturated television market.
Performances That Define the Narrative
Cillian Murphy’s done an amazing job of keeping Tommy Shelby’s trauma & ambition contained. As the only character who stays consistent, the others around him need to adapt. The original cast kept the power distribution relatively balanced, but in later seasons when Tom Hardy & others came in the game, they were needed to keep the dynamics interesting. Still, disregarding how often the show abandons logic to create cool images, the chemistry of the cast really kept the show grounded and helped keep the love & dysfunction of a family present. With a few moments where plots become unrealistic the acting keeps the show engaging and the audience on the edge of their seats.
Who Should Commit to the Shelby Clan
This series is perfect for those who like slow-burn dramas and enjoy the dangerous street politics and the politics of government. It’s also perfect for those who want shows that focus on character and history instead of presenting constant plot twists. This series builds its world like no other series and is perfect for those who are patient. On the other hand, if you want a show more focused on fast action and more historical accuracy, then this isn’t the show for you. The show likes to bend and snap history for this show, and sometimes it borrows the level of posturing and dramatization that disturbs a background, more subdued style. If you find the pacing slow or the world distracting, the later seasons will be nothing to write home about.
