Fauda is a gritty, high-stakes exploration of conflict that justifies your time

Fauda is perhaps the ultimate character-driven political showcase. Few other shows are able to capture the personality traits of those in the undercover world like Fauda. The lack of action that other television shows thrive on is made up for in the intense psychological drama of Fauda. This show is not for the squeamish.

The weight of the gray area

This series unique ability is to avoid the overly simplistic when describing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It shows the human side to both the Special Unit operatives and the targets they pursue. Some people might find that the show loses focus on where it’s all leading with its needless and excessive action scenes. However, staying grounded in the personal elements is exactly why this show doesn’t need to have an extensive perspective on the political situations of the Middle East to be gripping.

The writing for this show isn’t like the rest. Most other shows write their villains one dimensioinally. Here, there is as much character to the antagonist as there is to the protagonist. Lior Raz brings an amazing human performance to an otherwise chaotic world. There are no lazy writing tropes for action genres like war shows. It shows that the real pain and suffering is in the moments of rest and silence between fighting.

A shift in narrative focus

The growth of the series is impressive, especially in the later seasons as more layers and character arcs are incorporated. Early on, some episodes can feel like standard tactical procedurals. However, the show quickly transitions to an ensemble piece and considers the violence on the families and the other secondary characters. It especially evolves beyond the lesser shows which are dominated by hypermasculine and one dimensional characters. This evolution is appreciated

As for myself, I appreciate the series for more than just spectacle. I would say it is more of a character study on the gradual loss of the soul. The use of bilingual dialogue brings some international productions a nice level of authenticity and textural depth. It is not an easy watch but the series is particularly compelling because it is committed to not providing black and white answers.

Who should commit to the hunt

This show is for those that like darker, more complex stories. And if you like shows that focus more on realism and tense moments instead of special effects, you’ll like this show. This show requires focus because of all the loyalties changing and all the sudden story revelations that happen.

This show might not be for those that want a lighter show or a show about morally good characters. If you are easily offended by extreme violence, especially regarding the Israeli and Palestinian conflicts, then you probably shouldn’t watch this one.

What works

  • Nuanced portrayal of both sides of the conflict
  • Strong, grounded performances from the lead ensemble
  • Authentic use of bilingual dialogue
  • High-stakes tension that evolves across seasons

What falls short

  • Can be relentlessly grim and heavy
  • Occasional reliance on thriller tropes over political depth

What critics said

“It is truly an unforgettable piece of entertainment that should be on the must-see list for those who dig films and TV that revel in the gray area.”
