Love Mocktail is an uneven but earnest romantic slog
Love Mocktail strives to depict the intricacy of a man’s life with different love interests throughout the span of his life, but fails to justify its 2+ hour run time. Although it has some endearing early-stage connection moments, it ends up feeling like a collection of short abruptly contrasting scenes instead of an emotionally progressive story.
A disjointed timeline of heartache
The movie follows Aadi (played by Darling Krishna) through different texts of his young adult life. The structure aims to show how important relationships of young adulthood are and how they shape someone. Although it achieves its structure, parts become forced, and a lot of the time, slow, dragging and especially in the transitions of his teenage years and later.
The film’s strength lies with its quiet, character-focused moments. The film loses points with repetitive tragic love tropes that resonate little to no emotional investment from the audience. Overall, the attempt to tie together different stages in life feels forced, and one has to wonder if a tighter cut would save the film’s purpose overall.
Performance and chemistry dynamics
Darling Krishna is an excellent example of authenticity on both sides of the camera during the film’s underdeveloped scenes. He strikes the right kind of balance and chemistry with Milana Nagaraj to heighten the scripts’ moments, and gives us a glimpse of a better version of the film focused on their characters.
Sadly, most other characters are underdeveloped and fall into the trope of being mere devices used to aid a main character’s growth rather than being drawn as individuals with inner lives. As a result, the story focuses on one character’s inner world while the rest of the world’s relationships feel empty, are underdeveloped and make us feel like they aren’t as important as the main character’s coming of age story.
Who should skip the coaster
If you like movies with a lot of focus on the atmosphere and slow-burn romance, this would be a good movie choice for you. A lot of people might think watching this movie is a waste of time but if you’re looking to enjoy some romantic loss and platonic love loss then watch this movie (if you’re willing to stomach some repetitive scenes). This movie has a lot of scenes that drag out the emotional climax and the loss of memory gets repetitive, but it also has a very good, deep plot if you’re able to make it through the dull stretches of the movie.
